WOLFHEART Leader TUOMAS SAUKKONEN Talks Upcoming Album: “I Have A Very Personal Connection With This Record, Which I Don’t Have With The Previous Ones”

WOLFHEART, the solo project of Tuomas Saukkonen, has done it again. Their brand of Finnish melodic doom death, or as they like to call it, “winter metal”, has gained another worthy installment of their victorious saga, in the shape of their new album “Wolves of Karelia”.

With a new member in tow (Vagelis Karzis on guitar), this time they chose to tell the story of the war for the region of Karelia, between Finland and Russia. Throughout eight blistering tracks, WOLFHEART manages to conjure the tales of despair and adversity faced by the Finns, and the triumph over a significantly bigger army. Just as wildlife itself maintains harmony through a violent clash of the beautiful and unpredictable, “Wolves of Karelia” explores the previously coined genre of winter metal – smoothly connecting a traditional approach towards extreme genres (“Reaper”) with atmospheric or acoustic details (“The Hammer”, “Horizon on Fire”), crowned by the instrumental interlude, “Eye of the Storm”. And although the tracks have a similar theme, they do work as stand-alone numbers as well.

Sonic Perspectives collaborator Rodrigo Altaf had the chance to sit down with Tuomas to discuss the themes and the recording of their fifth album, the plans for an exclusive virtual concert due to tour postponement in early April, and much more.
