ØYSTEIN BRUN Talks BORKNAGAR Upcoming Album “Fall”: “The Beauty, Complexity & Magic Of Nature Is What I Want To Project Through My Music”

“Nature can be brutal. Rough. Merciless. And uncompromising.”

Øystein Brun pauses for a moment before affirming: “But it is not evil.”

Brun would know. The son of a mountaineer, and a forest dweller since childhood, Brun has made a career out of penning psalms to the natural world that has since birth captivated his imagination. But don’t fool yourself into believing him to be an acoustic folk musician who sings about all the pretty flowers and shit.

Brun‘s psalms to Midgard carry with them both the serenity of the northern seas and the turbulence of the iciest vortex. To the untrained ear, Borknagar‘s music may resemble violent, frozen winds. But those who appreciate and understand the heavier sides of both music and nature regard it as an extension of the world it inhabits.

“This complexity and beauty of nature, the magic of reality… that is what I want to project through my music.”

Anticipating the upcoming release of Borknagar‘s fourteenth extollment to the world around them, Brun was gracious enough to chat with Sonic Perspectives Texas Bureau Chief Gonzalo Pozo just as an arctic blast that Herr Brun might have rather fancied kindly receded back north from whence it came without welcome.
