ASH GRAY of VENOM PRISON Talks “Erebos” Album’s Creation, from Mythology to Musical Evolution: “Everything Seems to Link Around This Idea of Being Born From Chaos And Darkness…”

It’s been just over a month since Venom Prison dropped their widely-lauded album “Erebos”. 10 tracks of intelligent and powerful death metal take the listener to some incredible places, bolstered by Greek mythology as a vessel for the themes and concepts. The band released something of epic proportions, creating an insanely powerful album that pushed the death metal envelope, challenging listeners on what that genre can sound like if enough passion and dedication to its evolution is given. Our review on “Erebos” can be found here.

In “Erebos“, Venom Prison are at their absolute best in their career. Vocalist Larissa Stupar is formidable, with one of the most demanding voices in the metal world. A gravelly and raw scream is projected harshly towards the listener for a good 50 minutes, but her inclusion of some harrowing yet gorgeously smooth clean melodies are a fantastic addition to the band’s sound. Guitarists Ash Gray and Ben Thomas are seemingly of one mind, playing huge chord progressions and chugging away to their hearts’ content, whilst also diverting and complementing each others’ melodies throughout the tracks. Both Mike Jeffries and Joe Bills slay the bass guitar and drums, respectively. The drums fire at your eardrums at blistering speeds and the bass provides that heaviness which carries the poignant and powerful themes pushed by the band.

In short, fans of Venom Prison and new listeners are going to be astounded by the absolute triumph that is “Erebos“. Huge metal ballads like “Pain Of Oizys” or straight up neck-breaking tracks like “Gorgon Sisters” are sure to please and excite, and it’s almost a guarantee that the rest of the album will elicit the same feelings.

Sonic Perspectives writer Josh Muncke and Venom Prison guitarist Ash Gray sat down to have an in-depth chat. Besides expressing their mutual passions for photography, video games and more, they dove into all things “Erebos”. Going from equipment used in the studio, poor Joe Bills pumping out drum tracks non-stop, Larissa‘s development as a vocalist and numerous other subjects, the discussion provided a massive insight into the incredible album that is “Erebos“. Check out their conversation below.
