THE GIFT Leader MIKE MORTON Talks New Album: “We Wanted to Go In A Different Direction, Make the Music a Little More Raw—And We Did it.”

For the past 15 years, Mike Morton has been the one constant in the British Prog band The Gift.  Composer, lyricist, singer, frontman, and the occasional multi-instrumentalist—Morton did it all with a revolving set of bandmates.

But The Gift membership began to solidify with 2016’s Why the Sea is Salt.  And its most recent release—Antenna—features the same lineup of guitarists David Lloyd and Leroy James, keyboardist Gabriele Baldocci, bassist Stefan Dickers, and drummer Neil Hayman.  It’s a strong group, and they’re stretching their wings with Antenna, which is a little less Prog and a little more rock ‘n’ roll.

Just before The Gift’s release party and show for Antenna, Mike Morton spoke with Sonic Perspectives’ Mark Boardman about the twisting, somewhat convoluted history of the band.
