The music world has lost a cornerstone of rock history. John Lodge, the legendary bassist, songwriter, and vocalist for The Moody Blues, has passed away at the age of 82. A defining force behind some of the band’s most enduring songs, his death marks the end of a remarkable era for one of Britain’s most beloved rock institutions.
His family shared their grief in a heartfelt statement: “It is with the deepest sadness that we have to announce that John Lodge, our darling husband, father, grandfather, father-in-law, and brother, has been suddenly and unexpectedly taken from us.”
They added that, “As anyone who knew this massive-hearted man knows, it was his enduring love of his wife, Kirsten, and his family, that was the most important thing to him, followed by his passion for music, and his faith.”
The message captures the essence of a man who lived not just for his art, but for those closest to him. His family’s words reflect that balance between public performance and private devotion. “He was never happier than being on stage … and he adored performing with his band and son-in-law, Jon (vocalist with Yes), and being able to continue sharing this music with his fans. It gave him even more joy to be able to work with his daughter Emily and son Kristian and spend time watching his grandson John-Henry play football and dream of him playing for Birmingham City one day!”
It’s a deeply human portrait of a rock legend who, despite his fame, remained grounded in love and faith. The family went on to share a poignant image of his final moments: “John peacefully slipped away surrounded by his loved ones and the sounds of The Everly Brothers and Buddy Holly.”
Their words close with a sentiment that resonates deeply with anyone who has ever listened to The Moody Blues’ music: “We will forever miss his love, smile, kindness, and his absolute and never-ending support. We are heartbroken, but we will walk forward into peace, surrounded by the love he had for each of us. As John would always say at the end of the show, thank you for keeping the faith. Please understand that we are not making any further comments; however, we would like to leave you with John’s song ‘Whispering Angels’ whilst we take a moment to reflect on this incredible man who touched so many lives.”
Over more than five decades with The Moody Blues, John Lodge became an essential part of the band’s identity. His work helped shape classics like “Ride My SeeSaw,” “I’m Just A Singer (In A Rock And Roll Band),” and “Isn’t Life Strange?”—songs that defined the band’s sound and spirit.
As a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame since 2018, Lodge’s influence extended far beyond the stage. With more than 70 million albums sold, he stood among the few artists whose music bridged generations. Recognized by ASCAP, honored with an Ivor Novello Award, and recipient of Prog magazine’s Lifetime Achievement Award, his career embodied both artistry and endurance.
John Lodge leaves behind a body of work that will continue to inspire, a family that adored him, and a world of listeners who found solace in his music. Lodge‘s was a life in perfect harmony with love, faith, and song.
