Lightyear Entertainment is gearing up to launch a thrilling addition to the world of heavy metal documentaries. Nearly two decades after the release of “Get Thrashed: The Story of Thrash Metal” in 2006, the acclaimed film’s director, Rick Ernst, has joined forces with Lightyear to deliver an exciting spinoff, “Get Thrashed: Around the World.” Scheduled for digital release on Tuesday, December 10, the new feature promises to shed fresh light on the global phenomenon of thrash metal.
Using a treasure trove of deleted scenes, unused interviews, and enhanced visuals, “Around the World” embarks on a comprehensive journey into the lesser-known corners of the genre. The film spotlights thrash metal movements in countries such as Germany, France, the U.K., Norway, Denmark, Brazil, Japan, and Australia, painting a vivid picture of how the genre has flourished beyond U.S. borders. As the filmmakers promise, even the most dedicated thrash enthusiasts will uncover something new.
“Around the World” also benefits from modern technology, having been mastered in crisp 1080p resolution. This technological upgrade breathes new life into archival concert footage and behind-the-scenes photos, creating an immersive visual experience far surpassing the original “Get Thrashed.“
Thrash fans can look forward to interviews with iconic figures from bands like Metallica, Slipknot, Slayer, and Megadeth, alongside a host of others who didn’t appear in the 2006 film. These insights illuminate the genre’s cultural impact across continents, showing how thrash metal has become a unifying force in music.
In addition to its global scope, the film includes a newly recorded foreword, intermission, and afterword from Ernst himself, as well as a dedicated segment exploring American thrash bands overlooked in the original documentary. By weaving together archival footage with fresh interviews, the spinoff enriches the narrative of thrash metal’s roots and its explosive growth worldwide.
