Hatebreed guitarist Wayne Lozinak has stepped away from the band’s European tour after receiving a serious medical diagnosis that no one saw coming. What initially appeared to be minor symptoms quickly escalated into a situation requiring immediate medical attention and a flight back home.
The band broke the news via social media earlier today, asking fans to rally behind their longtime bandmate: “Send Wayne Lozinak some love! On the night of June 14th, while at Download Festival, Wayne began experiencing mild symptoms that raised concerns of a possible stroke. Out of an abundance of caution, he sought medical attention the following day upon arriving in Lille, France. After undergoing a CT scan at the ER, doctors discovered a brain tumor, leading to his immediate admission for further testing.”
The diagnosis followed a 24-hour evaluation, which included an MRI. Thankfully, the tumor was identified as non-cancerous.
“Following a thorough 24-hour evaluation, including an MRI, it was determined that the tumor is a benign meningioma—a slow-growing mass that has likely been present for years. We are immensely relieved that Wayne’s diagnosis is the best possible outcome given the circumstances.”
With that clarity, Lozinak is headed back to the United States to undergo surgery and begin his recovery process. The band emphasized that he remains in good spirits and fully intends to rejoin Hatebreed once he’s able.
“Wayne will be returning to the U.S. to prepare for surgery and focus on rest and recovery. His strength and resilience remain unwavering, and he is determined to return to Hatebreed as soon as he is able. We appreciate all the love and support from fans, friends, and the music community during this time.”
The band also asked fans to respect his space while he focuses on healing: “Further updates will be shared as appropriate. Thank you for respecting Wayne’s privacy as he begins this journey toward full health.”
Touring duties won’t stop for Hatebreed, as replacements have already been confirmed:
“@mattbachandmusic will be taking over touring guitar duties while bass will now be handled by Karl @firstbloodrules see you in the pit!”
This news comes just weeks before Hatebreed relaunches the Summer Slaughter tour, starting July 8 in St. Petersburg, Florida, and running through July 28 in Grand Rapids. The 2025 edition will feature support from Fugitive, Gridiron, Malevolence, Incite, Escuela Grind, and Snuffed On Sight on select dates.
The band has been actively celebrating its 30th anniversary since last fall, when they toured across North America with support from Carcass, Harms Way, and Crypta. That milestone has only reinforced the band’s commitment to its legacy, even through setbacks like this one.
