When it comes to unique vocalists in the world of metal, Korn’s Jonathan Davis stands in a league of his own. Renowned for his unconventional vocal style, Davis combines raw emotion, creativity, and individuality to craft performances that resonate deeply with fans. Korn guitarist Brian “Head” Welch recently reflected on Davis’ remarkable contributions to the band and the music industry during an appearance on the Everblack Podcast, and his words are a testament to Davis’ rare talent.
“You throw that freaky, unique, strange, amazing voice and character into what we’re doing, and he makes it Korn,” Head shared (as transcribed by Ultimate Guitar). “He helps make Korn unique. We all make Korn, obviously, our instruments, the Korn sound, and all that. But having him, he never rapped once. He does a scat thing. He likes to do things that no one’s doing.”
Head’s description highlights a critical element of what sets Davis apart. At a time when vocal experimentation often leaned toward rap or traditional melodies, Davis charted a new course, introducing scatting and other unorthodox techniques. His ability to embrace and embody vulnerability in his performances has not only shaped Korn’s identity but has also influenced countless artists in the rock and metal scenes.
Reflecting on Davis’ impact, Head noted how groundbreaking his approach was, particularly on Korn’s early releases: “I was talking to Munky the other day, and there was just something special about him [Davis] and how he got so vulnerable and open to share his emotions, like on that first album and stuff, you could feel his soul. And I don’t know who was doing that before him to that level.”
Head acknowledged the influence of artists like Layne Staley and Trent Reznor, whose music also delved deeply into emotional expression. Yet, Davis’ raw, unfiltered style seemed to go even further, pushing boundaries in a way that set the stage for bands like Linkin Park and others who followed. “I’m grateful for Jonathan Davis,” Head concluded, underscoring how essential Davis has been not just to Korn, but to an entire generation of music fans and musicians alike.
