“This album is all about growth,” she continues. “Every cloud has its silver lining, and there’s always light at the end of a dark period.”
“If you look for it,” she adds.
Anneke van Giersbergen is no stranger to facing daunting odds with a self-assured smile. Indeed, she penned one of her former band’s most gentle ballads, “You Learn About It,” in response to frustrations with the record label they’d just left; shocked metalheads worldwide when she left both The Gathering and metal itself a few years after; and was warmly received when she started playing metal again, albeit part-time. In between, there have been a number of acoustic rock albums, pop albums, rock albums, and collaborations with everyone from Anathema‘s Danny Cavanagh to some guy named Devin Townsend. And she was riding mighty high on the wings of her fantastic live album “Symphonized” and moving on to her next project when Covid-19 brought the world to a screeching halt last year.
“What better way than to try to turn it into something positive and something we can heal from and do together?” Ms. Van Giersbergen reasons.

That something positive is her soothing new acoustic album, “The Darkest Skies are the Brightest.” Anneke was kind enough to discuss the album, lockdown life, and performing not-metal to metal crowds with Sonic Perspectives scribe and Texas Bureau Chief Gonzalo Pozo just a few days before hell froze over.
