Mick Ralphs, the influential guitarist, songwriter, and founding member of both Bad Company and Mott The Hoople, has died at the age of 81.
He is survived by his partner Susie Chavasse, his two children, three stepchildren, and his bandmates Paul Rodgers and Simon Kirke, as well as millions of fans across the world.
Rodgers reflected on the loss, saying: “Our Mick has passed. My heart just hit the ground. He has left us with exceptional songs and memories. He was my friend, my songwriting partner, an amazing and versatile guitarist who had the greatest sense of humor. Our last conversation a few days ago we shared a laugh but it won’t be our last. There are many memories of Mick that will create laughter. Condolences to everyone who loved him especially his one true love, Susie. I will see you in heaven.”
Kirke added: “He was a dear friend, a wonderful songwriter, and an exceptional guitarist. We will miss him deeply.”
Rodgers, of Free, first met Ralphs in 1971. After an inspired jam session and an exchange of ideas, Ralphs made the pivotal decision to leave Mott The Hoople to form a new group with Rodgers. Together, they formed Bad Company, recruiting former King Crimson bassist and vocalist Boz Burrell and drummer Simon Kirke. With the backing of Led Zeppelin‘s famed manager Peter Grant, Bad Company became the first act signed to Zeppelin‘s Swan Song label.
The band’s rise was swift and formidable. Their 1974 debut album, Bad Company, went five times platinum, powered by enduring tracks like “Can’t Get Enough” and “Movin’ On,” alongside staples such as “Ready For Love,” “Rock Steady,” and the title track “Bad Company.”
Bad Company‘s influence will be further recognized later this year with their induction into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame.
Ralphs gave his final performance with the band on October 29, 2016, at London’s O2 Arena. Shortly afterward, he suffered a debilitating stroke and remained bedridden until his passing.
Though he’s gone, Ralphs leaves behind a powerful catalog of music that will continue to resonate with fans and musicians for generations to come.
Our condolences go out to Mick Ralphs’ family, friends, and bandmates during this difficult time.
