A new BBC documentary set to air later this month will offer an intimate look into the final chapter of Ozzy Osbourne’s life, a story of resilience, family, and a final return to the stage.
On July 5, the Prince of Darkness defied all odds to perform a farewell show in his hometown of Birmingham. The evening began with a set alongside his own band, and ended with an emotional finale with Black Sabbath, closing the circle in the place where it all began. The performance, according to the BBC, was classic Ozzy: “defiant, mischievous, giving the fans what they want.”
Just over two weeks later, Ozzy passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his family.
The upcoming film, Ozzy Osbourne: Coming Home, airs August 18 on BBC One and iPlayer at 9 p.m. (U.K. time). It charts the final years of Ozzy‘s life, filmed over three years with unprecedented access to the Osbourne family, including Sharon, Jack, and Kelly.
The documentary follows Ozzy and Sharon as they try to fulfill a long-held dream: moving back to the U.K. It also captures Ozzy’s difficult journey to regain enough strength to perform live once more — a mission filled with setbacks, but also triumphs. The family’s unfiltered reaction to his declining health brings rare moments of vulnerability and strength.
As the BBC describes it, the film “is full of love, laughter and tears and the kind of unforgettable family moments that we’ve come to expect from the Osbournes.” One of the most poignant reflections comes from Kelly, who states: “Iron Man wasn’t really made of iron.”
Clare Sillery, head of commissioning for BBC documentaries, called it “an intimate glimpse into their journey as they prepare to return to the U.K.” She added: “It features family moments, humor, reflection, and shows the enduring spirit that made Ozzy a global icon. We hope it brings comfort and joy to Ozzy‘s fans and viewers as they remember and celebrate his extraordinary life.”
Executive producers Ben Wicks and Colin Barr, from production company Expectation, spoke about the honor of documenting those final years: “It was an incredible privilege to spend the last few years with Ozzy, as well as Sharon, Jack and Kelly.”
They highlighted Ozzy‘s unwavering focus on making it back home to perform once more: “Ozzy wanted to make it back to the U.K. and appear on stage one last time — our film is an inspiring and poignant account of him fulfilling that dream.” Beyond the music, they say, his spirit endured: “Ozzy was loved by millions around the world not just for his music, but for his sense of mischief and his honesty all of which we saw plenty of in the final years of his life. But one thing shone through even more brightly to us, and that was Ozzy‘s intense love for his exceptional family who were by his side through it all.”
Originally conceived in 2022 as a multi-part series titled Home To Roost, the project shifted focus as Ozzy’s health declined. The result is a single, deeply personal one-hour film — Ozzy Osbourne: Coming Home — produced by Expectation in collaboration with JOKS Productions Limited for BBC One and iPlayer. The project is being distributed internationally by Banijay Rights.
As the documentary prepares to air, fans of Ozzy Osbourne — and rock music in general — will have the chance to witness a farewell that becomes the celebration of a man, a family, and a legacy that spans generations.

Ozzy & his family touched our hearts, our sense of belonging, because being an Osborne really was a much more normal experience for most of us & the family had its ups and downs, but we shared that we had been there too & brutally honest was a refreshing experience that made their loss so much ours too. From the bickering with jack and Kelly a mirror of Ozzy and Sharon’s life of real love of family to the forgiveness that each one had to give no matter how hard it was, I’m constantly grateful for watching that unending love for each other that showed how to get through anything as long as they never gave up on each other… I know that I personally feel like we have lost a lot of great things but the loss of such a wonderful family who chose to be vulnerable when reality tv was being sculpted by a “Prince of Darkness and his more normal than not family and friends❤️🩹❤️❤️🩹🫶🏽🫡❤️🔥🫡🖤
