Swedish purveyors of melancholic metal Katatonia have released a stirring and atmospheric version of the KISS classic “A World Without Heroes”. The track, which was previously available only as a bonus on the media-book edition of their most recent album Nightmares as Extensions of the Waking State (released in June via Napalm Records), is now finally being offered as a digital single. It’s accompanied by another bonus track, “Wind of No Change – Karin Park Remix”.
With “A World Without Heroes”, Katatonia manage to bridge the gap between timeless rock and their signature brand of somber modernity. The band pays homage to the spirit of the 1981 KISS original while reshaping it into a deeply moody and textural arrangement, elevated by Jonas Renkse’s hauntingly emotive vocals.
The release arrives just as Katatonia embark on their extensive EU/UK headlining tour, which began yesterday in Turku, Finland. They’re joined by special guests and labelmates Evergrey, as well as Klogr, bringing their immersive and emotionally charged performances to fans across Europe and the UK throughout the fall and winter. Tickets are already available, giving fans the opportunity to experience the band’s mesmerizing live show and to stream their new rendition of “A World Without Heroes”.
Frontman Jonas Renkse shared his thoughts on the release, saying: “A final single from the Nightmares… session, a cover of KISS’ “A World Without Heroes” which is one of the songs we usually listen to in the dressing room before going on stage. For us, it now also serves as a memory of Ace Frehley’s legacy. Nico’s rendition of his solo is nothing short of amazing! Also, this release includes Karin Park’s outstanding remix of “Wind of No Change”. Enjoy, and come see us in Europe this fall/winter!”
With this latest release, Katatonia continue to showcase their mastery of atmosphere and emotion, breathing new life into a rock classic while maintaining their unmistakable sense of melancholy and depth.
