BRUCE DICKINSON Reveals One Of The Secrets Behind IRON MAIDEN’s Longevity: “We Are Not a Democracy”

In a revealing interview on the Brazilian TV talk show “Conversa Com Bial”, Iron Maiden‘s frontman, Bruce Dickinson, shed light on the dynamics that keep the legendary band running smoothly. When asked if Iron Maiden operates as a democracy, Dickinson offered a candid analogy: “A football team is not a democracy. You’ve gotta have a manager, you’ve gotta have a captain, you’ve gotta have a game plan, and people have gotta stick to the game plan.”

Dickinson explained that while disagreements and arguments are inevitable in a passionate environment, effective teamwork involves clear roles and respect for each member’s expertise. He illustrated this by referring to the band’s approach to decision-making: “You can sometimes have areas where the coach will go, ‘You know what? I’m not in charge of the physiotherapy department. If the guy in charge of the physiotherapy department tells me that I need everybody to do this, this, this, that’s what we’re gonna do.'”

The band members have developed a system that allows for creative contributions from all sides while maintaining a cohesive direction. Dickinson highlighted the organic way responsibilities are divided within the band: “If Steve really is crazy about ‘I’m gonna do this, this, this’ musically, I’m, like, ‘Okay.’ So me and Adrian will write stuff, and if it fits, great; if it doesn’t, not a problem.”

Iron Maiden‘s ability to thrive lies in their mutual tolerance and respect, despite differing interests and attitudes. “We live with each other. It’s quite cool. It’s learning to be tolerant of each other, basically, because we’re not the same. We all have different interests, all have slightly different attitudes,” Dickinson noted. This understanding has forged a strong bond among the members, who have come to regard each other as family: “We tolerate each other, and we look after each other, and we care for each other.”

Judging by Dickinson‘s remarks, it seems the secret to Iron Maiden‘s enduring success is not a rigid adherence to democracy, but rather a balance of leadership, collaboration, and respect for each member’s unique contributions. This blend of structure and flexibility has allowed the band to grow together, creating music that resonates with millions worldwide.
