Adrian Smith and Richie Kotzen are releasing Smith/Kotzen‘s second full-length studio album, Black Light/White Noise, on April 4th via BMG.
Adrian and Richie continue to demonstrate their undeniable musical chemistry on their sophomore album, Black Light / White Noise. The two guitarists, both legends in their own right, pick up right where they left off from their critically acclaimed 2021 debut album and Better Days…and Night EP.
On this latest offering, they serve another captivating set of songs highlighting their masterful guitar work, memorable riffs, and soaring vocals. From the bluesy swagger of the opening track, “Muddy Water,” to the smoking rhythm and blues of “Heavy Weather” to the all-out rockers of “Life Unchained” and “Blindsided,” the duo explores a dynamic range of rock songs coupled with R&B while keeping the musicianship and songwriting organic while operating at an extremely high level.
The guitar phrasing on the album allows space for both musicians to take vocals while also coming together in perfect unison on choruses when the song calls for it. Lyrically, the songs are thoughtful and mature, reflecting the depth of experience between the two musicians. With Black Light / White Noise, Smith and Kotzen further solidify their status as one of the most compelling guitar duos in modern rock, delivering an album that will resonate with fans and impress fellow musicians. It’s a powerful statement from two masters at the peak of their creative powers.

Correspondent Robert Cavuoto chatted with the Iron Maiden‘s guitarist about the duo’s second release. Adrian shared that the creative process for Black Light/White Noise was similar to their debut album, though now that he and Richie are more accustomed to each other’s creative ways, things are easier. He explained that they both rely only on their skills, contributing ideas back and forth without a producer and sometimes engaging in a bit of friendly conflict to keep the songs interesting and get the best results.
Smith elaborated on how their combined and varied influences, his melodic hard rock and blues-based playing and Kotzen‘s rhythm and blues with jazz fusion, allow for their distinct qualities to shine. To accent their approach, they decided that there should be minimal stacking of guitars so that each guitarist’s sound could be distinct.
Adrian also talked about his early days in bands growing up, explaining how he started as a singer and guitarist paying his dues singing in pubs and clubs before joining Iron Maiden and how he has always had a passion for singing. His desire to sing is why working with Richie enhances their working dynamic. Over a cup of coffee and tea, Adrian shared with Richie what his all-time favorite Iron Maiden song is, you might be surprised by his answer!
