Most music fans got to know Derek Sherinian when he joined Dream Theater. However, he already had a rich history in music when these American prog metal giants brought him in, having toured with Alice Cooper, Kiss and Jimi Hendrix‘ drummer Buddy Miles. Known for his distinctively heavy keyboard sound, Derek soon embarked on a varied and increasingly complex solo career, with albums featuring collaborations with Allan Holdsworth, Steve Vai, John Petrucci, Yngwie Malmsteen, Zakk Wylde and many more.
In addition to his solo efforts, Derek was a founding member of Planet X, Black Country Communion, and more recently he formed Sons of Apollo, with his fellow Dream Theater partner-in-crime Mike Portnoy (drums), Billy Sheehan (bass), Ron “Bumblefoot” Thal (guitars) and Jeff Scott Soto (vocals).
While Sons of Apollo have just finished recording their second album, the follow up to 2017’s “Psychotic Symphony”, Derek sat down with Sonic Perspectives workaholic interviewer Rodrigo Altaf, and the two discussed in detail all the twist and turns of his musical endeavours for the last 3 decades, his keyboard signature tone and his preferences when selecting gear, and even details of the upcoming Sons of Apollo album.
