DAVE KERZNER and NICK D’VIRGILIO Remember KEVIN GILBERT and GIRAFFE on the Anniversary of Their Performance of THE LAMB LIES DOWN ON BROADWAY: “This Show Changed Our Lives and Careers.”

In the fall of 1994, multi-talented musician Kevin Gilbert had an idea.  He and some friends would perform the Genesis classic The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway for Progfest in Los Angeles.

He had just two weeks to put it together. So he called in some guys who are now well-known but, back then, were just struggling LA.-based players: drummer Nick D’Virgilio (later Spock’s Beard and Big Big Train) and keyboardist Dave Kerzner (Sound of Contact, In Continuum and various solo works).

The show happened at during the second day of Progfest ’94 at Valley Arts Center, Los Angeles, on November 8th, and the the band was Kevin Gilbert (Vocals, Organ, 12 String on “The Musical Box”), David Kerzner (Hammond Organ, RMI Electric Piano, Novatron, Yamaha CP-70B, ARP Pro-soloist), Stan Cotey (Bass, Bass Pedals, 12 String Electrics), Dan Hanc**k (Guitars) and Nick D’Virgilio (Drums, Backing Vocals).

Recently, D’Virgilio and Kerzner spoke with Sonic Perspectives’ Mark Boardman about that legendary performance, Genesis, The Lamb, and the legacy of the gone-too-soon Kevin Gilbert.
